MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the safest, most comfortable imaging techniques mri scanneravailable. MRI uses a magnetic field instead of radiation to obtain images of the body. Due to the high degree of accuracy and detail, MRI can be a crucial imaging study in the diagnosis of multiple conditions such as:

  • Cancer
  • Stroke
  • Orthopedic/spine disorders
  • Neurological disorders
  • Infections

Our high performance Siemens Magnetom Avanto 1.5 Tesla MR system provides the look and feel of an open MRI system with high resolution imaging. Because of its short length and larger opening, patients will be less likely to experience feelings of claustrophobia. The spacious MRI suite has a large window for natural light. In addition, Hastings Imaging Center offers a variety of patient comfort tools, including headphones for music and a two-way communication system to speak with the technologist anytime during the exam. If you like, bring your favorite CD to listen to during the exam.

THE MRI SCAN:

  • You will be asked to lie on a moveable table and remain still for approximately 30 minutes to one hour depending on the test ordered.
  • A coil containing small components that send and receive radio waves may be placed around the portion of body being examined.
  • If your particular procedure requires a contrast dye then the MRI technologist will insert an IV line into a vein in the hand or arm.
  • The technologist will go to an adjacent room where they can perform the tests while watching through a window. The technologist will be able to communicate with you through a sound system at anytime.
  • You will hear a faint knocking sound during the procedure which is normal and is the operation of the imaging process. You will have headphones and will be able to listen to your choice of music throughout the procedure.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PROCEDURE:

  • Some MRI studies require specific instructions. Your doctor will inform you of these preparations. You can also call the Hastings Imaging Center and a technologist will advise you of the proper steps toward a successful exam.
  • For your comfort, you may wish to wear a two-piece outfit (like a sweat suit) with no metal closures. You may be asked to remove some or all of your clothes and wear a gown during the exam if any of the clothing interferes with the exam.
  • Because an MRI is a huge magnet, you will be asked to remove all jewelry and personal items prior to entering the MRI suite.
  • The MRI technologist should be made aware of any serious health problems or previous surgeries. You should also tell the technologist of any allergies as they can then determine which contrast dye is the safest for each patient.
  • Patients must always notify the technologists of any possibility of pregnancy.
